Utilizing the toolbox of solutions present in living organisms, biotechnology helps meet these pressing needs, and HudsonAlpha provides fertile ground for several economic development models based on the innovations that accompany these breakthroughs. The Institute is ideally positioned for growing start-up and early stage companies, as well as for relocating or expanding established companies from outside the Madison County region. Our advantages include:
The 152-acre HudsonAlpha Biotechnology campus is located in Cummings Research Park, the second-largest research park in the U.S. and the fourth largest in the world. Cummings Research Park co-locates Fortune 500 companies with local and international business specializing in a range of high-tech industries, from aerospace and defense, to hardware and software development, to engineering, research and development, with the goal of transforming research into business success. The HudsonAlpha campus is minutes from the Port of Huntsville (Huntsville International Airport and International Intermodal Center) and convenient to I-565, I-65 and the Tennessee River Waterway system.
Superior Site Selection
Specifically designed to encourage collaboration, the flagship HudsonAlpha facility features 270,000 sq. ft. of world-class, state-of-the-art laboratory and office space. The lab spaces are built to the National Institute of Health standards for biosafety, with single pass air and emergency power. A newly opened 88,000 square foot building provides additional space to biotech companies of various sizes. This building officially opened in the fall of 2013 with the expansion of an original HudsonAlpha resident associate company. New construction on the campus is also available.
At HudsonAlpha, we believe working together results in quicker translation of discoveries to enterprise. The researchers and associate companies at HudsonAlpha share meeting rooms and common spaces, IT support, a library and café, all of which foster a culture that feels like community and invites mentor-protegé relationships. The Institute brings to small companies its expertise in growing business by providing access to outside experts and marketing direction.
The community surrounding HudsonAlpha is made up of talented and intelligent individuals who possess the drive to apply a wealth of knowledge in ways that create tangible benefits. Engineering done here, in North Alabama, propelled rockets into low Earth orbit, landed men on the moon, and sent information-seeking probes into deep space. For more than 50 years, Huntsville has applied its expertise to aviation and missiles at the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal. The same mindset that has accomplished great feats for NASA and the Army is the same mindset HudsonAlpha is applying to the promise of genomics and the use of biotechnology to change the way we approach health and disease.
The Huntsville metro area has the highest per capita concentration of engineers and technology workers in the country, and more than half of Huntsville area residents have degrees in engineering and science-related fields. The colleges and universities in Huntsville and the surrounding areas offer two-year, four-year and advanced degrees in the biosciences and related fields.
More than 27 associate companies have found a home at HudsonAlpha. Their stakeholders and employees work in life science sectors including therapeutics, health-related products and varied services. Their talented workforce helps drive innovation in the research laboratories and adjacent commercial ventures.
