What is the Summer Short Course?

The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is leading a Summer Short Course for rising high school juniors and seniors. This three-week laboratory-intensive experience will focus on many of the techniques used in the genomics and biotechnology fields, including:

  • Polymerase Chain Reaction
  • Bioinformatics resources that explore DNA
  • Synthetic biology and genetically-engineered bacteria

When and where will the Short Course be held?

The Short Course will run from July 7th through July 25th. Sessions will be held Monday-Friday mornings from 8:30am-12pm and will include a mix of large group discussion, small group planning and hands-on time in the laboratory. Students will need to attend all sessions and should not plan family vacations, schedule appointments or otherwise be absent during this timeframe.

When can I register?

Registration will open March 10th at 8:00 am and close June 1st at 5:00 p.m., or once we reach capacity.

Who is leading the Summer Short Course?

Jennifer Carden, an experienced high school educator and current member of the HudsonAlpha Educational Outreach team, will lead the Short Course. Throughout the experience, students will interact with other members of the Educational Outreach team, as well as scientists and entrepreneurs from across HudsonAlpha’s research laboratories and associated companies.

Is previous experience required?

Students need to have completed the 10th grade and successfully passed biology. No previous laboratory experience is required, but students must be willing to think scientifically, work collaboratively, receive and follow directions, maintain detailed laboratory notebooks and act in a professional and respectful manner at all times.

Is there a cost associated with participation?

The Short Course will cost $400, with a non-refundable deposit of $100 due at registration. This cost covers the resources and laboratory materials will be used throughout the three-week Summer Short Course experience. The remaining $300 of the tuition will be due by June 2, 2014.
